MASSENA -- The Nature Center at Robert Moses State Park has a new a building to house winter recreation equipment.
The Friends of the Nature Center said that more than 100 pairs of snowshoes and several sets of cross-country skis have been ordered.
Funding was provided through two grants this fall. The Alcoa Foundation and the St. Lawrence County Health Initiative pledged to support the Nature Center's winter recreation programs.
The Nature Center lost all of its recreation equipment in the March 2010 fire that closed its doors.
After the 1000 Islands Region of New York State Parks Recreation & Historic Preservation chose no longer to have a nature center in Massena last December, the New York Power Authority answered the public's call and brought staff back to work in August.
The staff now work in a trailer, with the storage building beside it, just off the trail head.
Once there is enough snow for activities, staff will be on hand seven days a week.
Ski and snowshoe rentals will remain at $4 a pair for two hours. Hot drinks will also be available.
Until the nature center is rebuilt, visitors should keep in mind that there is only a port-a-john available. NYPA's Hawkin's Point Visitor's Center is only three miles further up the road and open during the week.
