New and returning teachers will greet Heuvelton students Tuesday as school begins

HEUVELTON – Heuvelton students will start the year with some new teachers along with some once-familiar returning educators, according to Superintendent Susan Todd.

Arika Bateman Wulf is the district’s new k-8 counselor. Wulf is from Ogdensburg and was previously a school counselor in North Carolina. She also worked at Harrisville Central School as a guidance counselor.

Kristy Simmons has been hired as a first grade teacher. She previously worked at the school as a long-term substitute teacher.

Austin Weakfall will return to the district as a high school social studies teacher. Weakfall was previously employed at the school from 2010 to 2013 and has since served as a junior varsity girls basketball coach. Todd says Weakfall returned to Canton School District in 2013 due to call back rights from when he was laid off in 2012.

“It was a great loss for our district when he accepted their offer. The district was very fortunate to have him apply for the 7-12 social studies position needed for this fall,” she said in a recent newsletter.

Retired music teacher Lisa Gardner will return to the district to serve as a longtime substitute for the k-12 vocal music program, due to an ongoing shortage of teaching staff. Todd says the district will continue search for a permanent music teacher.

Matt Mosses, a teaching assistant for k-6 physical education, will leave his position as he takes a new position at Ogdensburg Free Academy.

“We are sad to see him go and wish Mr. Moses the very best,” Todd said in the newsletter.
