POTSDAM -- Nearly 40 Girl Scouts from across the North Country recently earned their science patches at an annual activity night with Clarkson University's student chapter of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE).

The group of mostly fourth- and fifth-graders gathered in the Cora & Bayard Clarkson Science Center for an evening of interactive demonstrations about STEM -- science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Activities included creating homemade lava lamps and abacuses, and learning about cell structure and the Fibonacci spirals on pinecones.

Benjamin Baumgardner, the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics AmeriCorps Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) member at Clarkson, also delivered a presentation that featured a quadcopter drone flight and a demonstration on 3D printing a Lego brick.

Clarkson SWE has partnered with the Girl Scouts on the annual activity night for nearly two decades, helping to teach more than a thousand troops in the North Country about engineering and opportunities for women in STEM education and careers. This year's event was organized by Clarkson SWE officers Renata Spinosa '18 and Kate McKinley '19 along with 23 other student volunteers.

Clarkson’s SWE student chapter meets monthly and hosts a variety of events that combine fun and professional development. Membership is open to undergraduate and graduate students of all majors and genders.
