'Near space' weather balloon that could have gone up 80,000 feet recovered in Potsdam

POTSDAM -- Clarkson Amateur Radio Club, or K2CC, recently launched and recovered a “near-space” weather balloon.

Club members believe the balloon reached an altitude of over 80,000 feet, where a homemade “space capsule” took photos of space as well as some notable places on Earth.

Recovering the capsule took two days and involved a road trip, a short daytime hike, a nighttime drive on scary logging roads, a small plane rental and corresponding search-and-rescue flight, a hike after nightfall, crossing a stream using a beaver dam that they had to repair, and pushing through thick boreal forest.

Patrick F. Wilbur, a Clarkson graduate, has maintained a blog, with more about the project and the adventure, with photos, at blinkenlichten.org/blog/2011/05/08/near-space-weather-balloon-recovery-adventure/
