CANTON – Nature Up North, an environmental education initiative based at St. Lawrence University, hosted a workshop for local teachers focusing on strategies for incorporating more nature-based learning the curriculum On Aug. 4-5.
Twelve teachers representing Madrid Wadding Central Schools, Canton Central Schools, Ahkwesahsne Board of Education, Clifton-Fine Central Schools, Heuvelton Central, St. James School, and Potsdam Central Schools attended.
Attending teachers had opportunities to not only learned how to participate in hands-on citizen science projects, but had time to develop lesson plans with support from Nature Up North staff.
Topics covered included STEM learning through citizen science; using natureupnorth.org to collect and store environmental data; and strategies and resources for integrating place and nature-based learning into lesson plans.
The workshop was made possible through grant funding from the ALCOA Foundation. Nature Up North is a project of St. Lawrence University.
