NORWOOD – A gas leak at BOCES’ Seaway Tech forced evacuation of the school Monday morning but the situation was soon resolved.
Principal Ron Burke said the high winds blew over a natural gas rooftop heating unit at about 9:30 a.m. with such force that students in the class below heard it. The toppling of the unit apparently broke the gas line feeding it.
“They said it shook the room. The unit is quite heavy,” he said.
He also said that shortly after the noise, the students smelled gas.
An alarm was sounded and “it took 90 seconds to get all then students out” of the BOCES building on State Rt. 56, Burke said.
Fire volunteers and representatives of St. Lawrence Gas and National Grid soon arrived to repair the break and to secure the scene.
“They worked quickly, and the students were back in the building by quarter to eleven,” Burke said.
The unit was so heavy, he said, it took five or six men to right it.
“We were very fortunate there was no damage to the building and no injuries,” Burke said.
