National Weather Service warning of hazardous conditions as rain and snow begin this afternoon in St. Lawrence County

With rain and snow in the forecast today and tonight for the St. Lawrence Valley and the Adirondacks, the National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for the region.

Precipitation is overspreading the North Country from southwest to northeast with light rain or light snow at lower elevations and light snow in the mountains, the NWS says. Eventually it will change to all rain in the lower elevations tonight with snow continuing in the mountains. Watch for gusty southeast winds in the higher terrain of the northern Adirondacks up to 35 mph this evening through the overnight hours, the NWS warns. This could make travel conditions a bit messy, and they also warn that isolated power outages are possible.

High today is expected to reach about 40 degrees, with lows tonight in the mid-30s.

Rain is expected tomorrow, beginning as snow in the mountains, Highs will be in the 30s. Rain could continue into the evening, with lows remaining in the 30s.

The NWS forecast for the North Country:

Today: Snow before 3pm, then rain and snow. High near 39. East wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

• Tonight: Rain or light rain before 8pm, then rain after 8pm. Low around 36. Southeast wind 8 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

• Friday: Rain before noon, then showers likely, mainly between noon and 5pm. High near 43. Calm wind becoming northwest 5 to 7 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

• Friday Night: A chance of showers before 8pm, then a chance of showers after 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 38. West wind 5 to 7 mph becoming south after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

• Saturday: Showers likely, mainly after 7am. Cloudy, with a high near 53. South wind 9 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

• Saturday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers before 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 39. West wind 5 to 8 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

• Sunday: Partly sunny, with a high near 46. Northwest wind around 5 mph.

• Sunday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 33. Northwest wind 3 to 5 mph.

• Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 47. Light northwest wind.

• Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 36. South wind 3 to 6 mph.

• Tuesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 59. South wind 9 to 11 mph.

• Tuesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 45. Southwest wind 9 to 11 mph.

• Wednesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 55. West wind around 8 mph.
