CANTON -- While classes may not be in session during the month of July, a number of St. Lawrence University faculty and staff have been busily contributing their expertise to national and local media reports on current events, national policy issues, and even trends in the college search process.

Associate Professor of History Matthew Carotenuto co-authored an opinion piece, regarding the significance of President Obama’s Kenyan heritage ahead of the Global Entrepreneurship Summit, which was held July 25 to 26 in Nairobi, Kenya. Carotenuto's op-ed was featured in Politico, which also quoted him in a follow-up article to Obama’s visit to Africa.

Professor of English Bob Cowser, who has been teaching in prisons for 10 years, has also been a source for national media. He was interviewed by Politico on the extension of recent Obama administration's decision to extend Pell grants to state and federal prisoners, and he was featured on the National Public Radio syndication “To the Best of Our Knowledge.” The interview came on the heals of an opinion piece published in the Syracuse Post-Standard.

Associate Professor of History Howard Eissenstat was quoted by the Los Angeles Times, Deutsche Welle (DW), Europe Online and was interviewed by San Francisco-National Public Radio affiliate KQED for Turkey’s bombing of ISIS in Syria as well as the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

In the past month, Charles A. Dana Professor and Chair of the Department of Economics Steven Horwitz had two opinion pieces published, one on libertarian parenting in Newsweek and another on how anyone could be part of the 1 percent in MarketWatch. He has also been a guest on several nationally syndicated radio programs, including Ed Dean Talk Radio, The Lars Larson Show, and the Dave Kruser Show, following a study on the relationship between government regulations and poverty for the Mercatus Center at George Mason University.

Forbes also turned to Meg Bernier Keniston, St. Lawrence’s social media manager, on the increasing use of cell phones by students researching colleges and universities. Her comments can be found on page three of the report.

Locally, the Watertown Daily Times has interviewed R. Danielle Egan, St. Lawrence University professor and coordinator of gender and sexuality studies, after the Supreme Courts ruling legalizing gay marriage; Melissane Schrems, associate professor of history, regarding the significance of the history of Ogdensburg. WWNY-TV interviewed Calvin (Fred) Exoo, Charles D., Sarah and John D. Munsil professor of government, for its report on possible federal budget cuts and the impact it would have on Ft. Drum, and Time Warner Cable News interviewed Valerie Lehr, dean of academic affairs, for St. Lawrence’s listing in the Fiske Guide to Colleges.
