GOUVERNEUR -- The Gouverneur Police Department is dealing with what appears to be movie prop money in the form of $100 bills marked “FOR CINEMATIC USE ONLY” and “FOR MOTION PICTURE USE ONLY.”
Gouverneur Police Chief Laurina Greenhill said she wanted to make “citizens and businesses aware that fake movie money could be circulating around our community and surrounding communities” after three teenagers turned in six of the bills.
The fake money was turned into the police department on Sunday, Feb. 7 after the teenagers allege a woman gave them the money while they were walking on W. Main Street in the vicinity of the Dollar General Store.
At a quick glance the fake bills appear genuine, Greenhill said in a press release, but they are clearly marked "FOR MOTION PICTURE USE ONLY." The bills also lack any security features and have a waxy texture that should make it obvious to anyone that they are not legitimate.
Novelty "prop money" is widely available for purchase on the internet and not illegal so long as it is not passed off as real currency, Greenhill said.
“We have not received any complaints where the bills were attempted to be passed in exchange for goods and services. If someone attempts to make purchases with this prop money do not accept it and report the incident to your local law enforcement agency,” the chief said.
The Gouverneur Police Department is working with the US Secret Service in this matter, Greenhill said.
