OGDENSBURG -- More than 90 students attended the Northwest Tech Cosmetology program’s second hair show.

Three salon professionals modeled techniques including haircutting, clipper cutting, coloring, up-do styles, and make-up.

Students joined them on stage and practiced.

“I liked seeing the work up close and personal. We got to see everything first hand, which gave us a real feel for what goes on in an actual salon outside of our classroom,” said Mikayla Roberts, a senior from Morristown Central School District.

Program seniors did all of the work to organize and run the show. They introduced the techniques, salons, and stylists, while also entertaining while set up was taking place.

“They worked side by side with the stylists behind the scenes and on the stage,” said cosmetology instructor Vicky Garrabrant.

Many of the seniors were also models, getting their hair cut, colored, or styled in an up-do. In addition to seniors, 26 juniors attend the cosmetology program including two adult students.

Bethany Gordan, a senior from Morristown Central, modeled for Shelly Murray, who performed an ombré color technique in which she highlighted her hair using the tease method. At the same time, Ogdensburg Free Academy senior Makenzie Holland received a rainbow color technique from Crystal Schoettlin.

Other demonstrations included haircutting and clipper cutting.

“It’s great for the students to see what’s going on the industry, it shows them new techniques that they don’t get to see in the classroom,” said Garrabrant. “It also gives the industry a chance to come in and share their knowledge, which we are extremely grateful for.”
