COLTON -- During the Labor Day holiday weekend more than 70 experienced whitewater kayakers from all over the eastern US and Canada took advantage of water releases by Brookfield Renewable Power to paddle the Stone Valley section of the Raquette River in Colton.
Two kayakers, Tony Gianfagna of Watertown and Ciaren Brown of Rochester, paddled down waterfalls and through rapids in a two-person kayak. Gianfagna has kayaked at Stone Valley for four years but he said the two-person paddle is really unique and challenging.
Gianfagna, a graduate of SUNY Potsdam, teaches at Indian River and Brown is currently a student at SUNY Potsdam.
