BRASHER FALLS -- More than 70 young hockey players partook in Tri-Town Minor Hockey’s second skills competition and chicken barbecue.

The event raised more than $5,000.

The cash will pay for both the peewee and bantam teams to compete in the NYSAHA Tier III Championship in Buffalo the weekend of March 13 to 15. The bantam team, coached by Mark Goodnow, Seth Clothier, Adam Soller and Eric McLaughlin, are entering the tournament as the first seed from the Northern Zone. The peewee team, coached by Chris Rose, Chad Phippen, Jeb Euto and Kevin Hayes, enter as the second seed.

The St. Lawrence Central varsity boys team and four members of the girls' team assisted with the skills competition as demonstrators, team ambassadors, and skill station engineers.

"We had only two-and-a-half hours … to move more than 70 players through eight skill stations. I don't think we could have done it without the boys and girls helping us out. They were excellent role models for the youngsters who already look up to them for the work they do on the ice," Rose said.

The skills winners include:

Fastest skater: Nate Stickney (varsity); Aiden Barnes (mini-mites); Hagen Norman (mites); Evan Smith (squirts); Olivia Hunter (peewees); Drew Rose (bantams); and Keith Felix (midgets)

Fastest goalie: Tristan Russell (mites) and Zachary Strawser (squirts)

Puck Control: Ian Bressett (varsity); Avery Marcil (mini-mites); Hagen Norman (mites); Bendan Phippen (peewees); Sam Lyon (bantams); Ian Bressett (midgets)

Elimination shoot-out: Owen Houle (varsity); Hagen Norman (mites); Ashton Adams (squirts); Logan Shantie (peewees); Drew Rose (bantams); Jack Pullano (midgets)

Goaltender saves: Ethan Gibson (mites); Josh Lyon (squirts); Torran Robertson (peewees); Rico Dimatteo (bantam); Austin LePage (midgets)

Goaltender clears: Bransen Kinnear (varsity); Jace Dutch (squirts); Jonah Burnett (peewees); Rico Dimatteo (bantams); Bransen Kinnear (midgets)

Accuracy shooting: Nick Kowalchuk (varsity); Tyler Bethel (squirt); Carter Rose (peewees); Trent Dow (bantams)

Hardest shot: Nate Stickney (varsity); Mason Frary (squirts); Carter Rose (peewees); Drew Rose (bantams); Owen Kowalchuk (midgets)

Breakaway style challenge: Nate Stickney (varsity); Ashton Adams (squirts); Logan Shantie (peewees); Colby Jenkinson (bantams); Bransen Kinnear (midgets)

"The chicken barbecue was a nice hint of summertime in the midst of a deep freeze." Rose said. "We have to thank Hackers Sports for recognizing Michael Donie and Will Silver as the individual fundraising winners with new sticks. Given the price of sticks these days, the families really appreciated it."

To up the ante, varsity Coach Mickey Locke agreed to invite the TTMH team that raised the most money to a private skate with the boys' varsity team. The peewees edged out the squirts in a tight race.

Locke held up his promise and the varsity split up with the peewees and played four-on-four games.

"We want to thank the varsity team for coming out and sharing the ice with us. It was a tremendous opportunity for my team to interact with the level of skill and teamwork you see in our varsity team. They really enjoyed it," Rose said.

The TTMH peewee team kicks off state championship play on Friday, March 13 against Batavia at 8:15 a.m., followed by Onondaga at 4:15 p.m. The bantam team faces Valley at 10 a.m. and Brockport at 8 p.m.

All games will be at the Northtown Center in Amherst.
