CANTON -- A total of 633 degrees were awarded at St. Lawrence University’s commencement ceremony Sunday.
There were 601 candidates for bachelor’s degrees, of which 20 were candidates for summa cum laude; 25 candidates for master of education degrees; five candidates for a master of science in mental health counseling; and two Certificates of Advances Studies in Education.
The five most popular majors this year are, in descending order were business in the liberal arts, economics, psychology, government, biology.
The senior with the highest cumulative grade-point average over four full years of study at St. Lawrence is Freya Woods of Barneveld, N.Y. Her GPA is 3.94905 out of a possible 4.0. She majored in psychology and English.
It is a tradition at St. Lawrence for graduates to have the option of receiving their degree from family members associated with the University. Several graduates received degrees from relatives:
• Dylan Arpey, presented by his father, Michael Arpey, SLU trustee
• Sierra Gagnon, presented by her father, Patrick Gagnon, assistant vice president of safety and security
• Richard “Stepper” Hall, presented by his mother, Joanie Hall, trustee
• Alison Noble, presented by her mother, Suzanne Noble, assistant to the associate dean of student life
• Morgan O’Donnell, presented by her grandfather, Larry Winston, chair of the Board of Trustees emeritus
• Alex Ranger, presented by his father, Michael Ranger, trustee
• Francis Shields, presented by his grandfather, Frank Shields, retired director of alumni relations
• Lucy Zimmerman, presented by Trip Samson, trustee
• Thressa Zimmerman, presented by her mother, Christine Zimmerman, director of institutional research
