More than 5,000 of National Grid’s 43,060 customers in St. Lawrence County were without power Friday evening following severe wind gusts.
The outages covered about 990 residences in Potsdam, 450 in the town of Waddington, 550 in the village of Waddington, and 840 in Pierrepont, among others, according to National Grid’s website.
The outage included Walmart’s Potsdam location, a call to the store confirmed. The severe wind and outages have also caused several cancelations, according to B99.3.
National Grid expects most service to be restored by “late tonight,” according to a press release, with some “isolated outages” to be repaired by Saturday.
Specific “estimated restoration” times listed on the website at 5:30 p.m. Friday ranged from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday.
National Grid has restored service in many areas, but continuing strong winds have knocked power out for other customers and complicated repair work, the company said.
“Our crews are working as fast as the weather and safety protocols will allow, and they have made great progress in some very difficult conditions. We’re pleased that the majority of our customers will have service restored by later tonight,” said Ken Daly, president of National Grid New York.
The company said continued winds may bring more outages, and customers should report any new outages to 800-867-5222 to expedite repairs.
