OGDENSBURG -- More than 45 speakers addressed members of states mental health committees Tuesday in a meeting that spanned from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The hearing was designed to offer the public a chance to share the significance of Ogdensburg's state mental facility in the wake of proposed changes that would end inpatient care for adults and children.
St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center Task Force Chairman Chuck Kelly said the event was originally scheduled to last until 2 p.m.
More than a hundred people attended the public hearing at Ogdensburg's City Hall.
The 47 speakers shared personal stories regarding experiences with the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center and the impact it has had on their families.
A spokesman for Sen. Patty Ritchie, who attended the meeting, said the hearing grew emotional at times with tears coming from both the public and committee members.
North Country Assembly members Addie Russell and Ken Blankenbush were among other officials who attended, along with Sen. David Carlucci who chairs the Senate mental health committee and Aileen Gunther who chairs the Assembly mental health committee. North Country Sen. Betty Little was also in attendance.
