Good weather and great activities attracted over 400 people to this year's Gouverneur Fire Department's Open House Saturday.

Fire investigator Joe Lacks said this year's major attractions were the Life-Net Helicopter from Watertown and St. Lawrence County Sheriff Department's Kids ID program where 100 youngsters had their photos and fingerprints taken and an ID card made for use in the event if the child become missing.

Lacks said both adults and kids stood in long lines for the chance to ride in GFD's Engine 18. Another major attraction was the SLC Fire Chiefs Safety Trailer where kids trained to escape smoky conditions.

The sheriff''s K9 provided an exhibition on how "Hershey" and his handler, Deputy Andy Ashley look for drugs during a search, according to Lacks.

At least 25 new car seats were installed by the Gouverneur based NYS Police and specialists Bonnie and Stewart Walker. Children and adults also had hands on experience on using charged hose lines and putting out fires with fire extinguishers.

Lacks said the local Red Cross provided safety material on fire and life safety. The Gouverneur Rescue Squad also had an ambulance and crew on display.
