Monday, Aug. 5 is a holiday in Canada, and U.S, Customs and Border protection is offering guidance on how to expedite border crossings for travelers coming through the U.S. ports of entry at Massena and Ogdensburg.
The holiday is known generally in Canada as Civic Holiday, but goes by other names in the various provinces.
CBP anticipates that the holiday could mean more travel between the U.S. and Canada, which could lead to delays at border crossings.
The agency suggests preparing for inspection before arriving at the booth. If you have one, have your WHTI (Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative) or RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) enabled documents in hand before reaching primary inspection.
Travelers should declare all items acquired abroad. Individuals should end cell phone conversations before arriving at the booth. Travelers should also have their windows rolled down for inspection and remove sunglasses and hats before entering the inspection area.
They also suggest allowing for extra time and to check border wait times at www.cbp.gov in case of exceptionally heavy traffic.
Travelers are encouraged to visit the “Know Before You Go” section of the CBP web site, http://www.cbp.gov/travel.
