RUSSELL -- The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office says that what was thought to be a threat to Edwards-Knox Central School today was actually a misunderstanding of a reference to an incident in the Harrisville School District yesterday.

Sheriff’s deputies and New York State Police responded to a 911 call from E-K officials shortly before 8 a.m. who said they had received an email from an unknown individual saying that they heard there was going to be a shooting at the school today.

School officials called 911 and activated an emergency evacuation of the school. Deputies and troopers responded to the scene, secured the school and began investigating the email.

A short time after arriving on scene it was determined that there was no threat to Edwards-Knox School or its students and faculty.

Officials returned the students to the school and held a brief assembly informing all the students and any parents that showed up to sign their children out that everything was fine and at no time was anyone in danger, a statement from the sheriff’s office said.

The individual who sent the email was identified, deputies said, and it had been “determined that what they had heard was in regard to an incident in the Harrisville School District on Tuesday that is under investigation by the New York State Police,” the statement from the sheriff said.

Harrisville school officials said they had seen social media threats of a school shooting and sent out an automated telephone call to parents Tuesday night to inform them that police would be at the school all day today.

The St. Lawrence County Sheriffs Office was assisted on scene by New York State Police.
