OGDENSBURG -- City police say the two juveniles they were seeking earlier on Tuesday are connected with two shotguns that were stolen from a motor vehicle, a coincidence that led to Ogdensburg schools being locked down.
Police were investigating a report of two missing children who "voluntarily" ran away from home when a separate report came in of shotguns being stolen on Pickering Street, Det. Sgt. Mark Kearns said in an earlier news release.
The two children, who police are not identifying, have been charged with stealing the firearms. One is charged with second-degree criminal trespass, a misdemeanor. The other is charged with fourth-degree grand larceny and third-degree burglary, both felonies, police said.
They were released to “responsible parties” with orders to appear in St. Lawrence County Family Court on a later date, police said.
The lockdown at Ogdensburg schools was lifted after less than an hour, police said.
“There are no indications that the students, staff and faculty at any Ogdensburg City Schools were ever in any danger. No threats were made to the school or to any one person,” city police said in a news release issued late on Tuesday afternoon.
