Meteorologists: Rain to continue through week in St. Lawrence County, let up for Christmas, briefly turn to snow over weekend

The National Weather Service forecast says rain will continue through the week in St. Lawrence County, let up for Christmas day and then turn to snow on Saturday.

Meteorologists say there is a 100 percent chance the rain will continue through Tuesday, with the chances decreasing to 30 percent as fog rolls in at night. Temperatures are predicted in the high 40s during daylight, falling to the low 40s in the p.m. hours.

Wednesday will start out partly sunny, then followed by a 20 percent chance of showers with temperatures approaching the mid 50s. Wednesday night brings a 60 percent chance of showers with temperatures in the low 50s.

The NWS says Thursday will be a warm one, with temperatures getting into the low 60s with 50 to 70 percent chances of rain countywide. Nighttime hours bring a 30 percent chance of showers with temps around 40 degrees.

Christmas day will be sunny and warmer, the NWS says, with temperatures in the mid 40s giving way to a partly cloudy night with temperatures just below freezing.

Saturday brings a 30 percent chance of snow then rain in Canton, Gouverneur, Ogdensburg and Potsdam with temperatures around 40. Massena is forecast to be partly sunny with similar temperatures.

The detailed forecast for Potsdam:

Tuesday - Rain, mainly before 5 p.m. High near 48. Southeast wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Tuesday night - A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly before 7 p.m. Areas of fog. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 39. Southwest wind 3 to 7 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Wednesday - A 20 percent chance of showers after 1 p.m. Increasing clouds, with a high near 54. Light southeast wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph in the morning.

Wednesday night - Showers likely. Cloudy, with a low around 51. South wind around 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Thursday - Showers likely, mainly before 1 p.m. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 61. Southwest wind 15 to 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Thursday night - A 30 percent chance of showers. Partly cloudy, with a low around 39. Southwest wind 8 to 13 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Christmas Day - Mostly sunny, with a high near 44. West wind 7 to 10 mph.

Friday night - Partly cloudy, with a low around 30. West wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm after midnight.

Saturday - A chance of snow showers before 9am, then a chance of rain and snow showers between 9am and 10am, then a chance of rain showers after 10am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 40. Light southeast wind. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Saturday night - A 50 percent chance of showers. Cloudy, with a low around 32. East wind 3 to 5 mph.

Sunday - A chance of rain and snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 40. North wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Sunday night - Partly cloudy, with a low around 24. North wind 5 to 7 mph.

Monday - A 30 percent chance of snow showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 37. Northeast wind 3 to 6 mph.
