Sen. Ritchie to lead meeting in Heuvelton Thursday on use of safety triangles on Amish buggies

HEUVELTON -- State Sen. Patty Ritchie (R- Heuvelton) will lead a meeting Thursday on the use of orange safety triangles on the back of horse-drawn buggies driven by members of the Amish community.

Ritchie will meet at 10 a.m. at the Heuvelton Fire House with Amish bishops and members of the St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators to see if some agreement can be reached on the use of the safety triangles or some other way of making the buggies more visible, especially at night.

The meeting will be closed to the public.

While some Amish do use the triangles on their buggies, some others reportedly view them as too garish to be acceptable in the practice of their faith.

In consideration of some complaints from drivers of motorized vehicles about the difficulty seeing the buggies, the county board has taken up the question of making it law for the buggy drivers to use the safety devices.
