MASSENA -- No one was injured when heating pump malfunction caused J.W. Leary Junior High to be evacuated on Tuesday after the device burned up and filled the lobby with smoke.
“It burned out internally, causing smoke to rise in the main lobby, tripping the alarm system,” Massena Central Superintendent of Schools Patrick Brady said.
He said it took place around 2:55 p.m., so there weren’t many students at school.
“It was during our after-school period, so there were probably 75 students in the building along with staff that evacuated,” Brady said. “Other than to replace the pump, there weren’t any damages and no injuries.
“The fire department was on-scene within minutes and they used a large fan to ventilate the area.”
He said the “evacuation process went as planned” and there was no impact on the following school days.
“The pump has since been replaced and is back in working order,” Brady said. “I would thank the Massena Fire Department for their timely response.”
