MASSENA -- Kaneb Orchards has scored with two of its hard ciders winning gold in the 2016 World Cider Championships sponsored by Tastings.com.
In its third year producing hard cider, Kaneb Orchards’ Cranberry Crisp Cider and St. Lawrence Cider were recognized in the recent competition.
The goal is “to produce small-batched cider that is easy to drink and not too sweet, a cider that everyone will want to drink, and to educate the public on the popular drink,” according to Nancy Badlam of Kaneb Orchards.
They are now producing four varieties of cider.
Over 50 years ago, the elder Edward Kaneb started planting apples trees as a hobby. The trees produced apples which the family sold to local cider mills for pressing. Years of trucking the apples to other parts of New York got expensive with fuel costs, so in 2009 they made the decision to start pressing their own cider.
Edward Kaneb Jr. and his sister Elizabeth Kaneb invested in equipment, took classes and began cider pressing and bottling.
After classes at Cornell University, they fermented their first hard cider batches, started experimenting with different apples, yeast and blending, and began bottling.
Kaneb Orchards Hard Cider has won multiple gold at competitions around the country including the NY Food & Wine Classic, NY State Fair, Drink Outside the Grape, The Big E Northeast, Great Lakes Cider & Perry Competition, and Indy International Wine Competition.
Their cider is available to purchase in New York at liquor and wine stores and restaurants. Availability is listed on the company’s website at www.kaneborchards.com.
