MASSENA -- The Holy Name of Jesus Academy saw its fourth 12th grade class turn their tassels on June 12.

After the ceremony of the blessing of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, which took place the day before, the seniors were able to have their Baccalaureate Mass in the new, recently completed church.

The Class of 2016 includes Mary-Caitlin Jemison of Massena, Rose Carlisle and Therese McCarty, both of Nicholville, Celeste Fullerton, Josephine Beck, Bridget Schiltz, Maria Bradley and Helen Betz, all of North Lawrence, Angela Roberts of Stitville, Alexandra Wallace of Nevada, Sarah Young of Arizona, Gabrielle Miklaszewski of Massachusetts, Gabrielle Beltran of Virginia and Adrianna Schell of Texas.

Mother Marie Reginald, mother prioress of the school, gave the opening speech, evoking such figures as G. K. Chesterton, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, and Fr. Humbert Clerissac.

She made a parallel between the day the girls made their debut into the world and the day they make their entrance into a new stage of their lives, through Chesterton’s essay, “Our Birthday.”

“In it, Chesterton says we celebrate the day we were born because we celebrate that we have become heirs of a great inheritance,” school officials said.

The salutatorian, Marie Therese McCarty of Nicholville, spoke of the “responsibility that each graduate has to take up her God-given role in society and make good use of the education she has received.”

The valedictorian, Sarah Marie Young of Arizona, spoke of “some of the reasons why she and her parents made the choice to come so far to this school,” officials said.

The guest speaker was Rev. Father Gerard Beck, who “gave simple, uplifting advice to the graduates,” according to a news release from Holy Name. The ceremony came to a close with the entire school singing their alma mater.
