MASSENA -- The quarter-century old Creative Playground, Danforth Place, will be torn down Wednesday morning.

Public Works Superintendent Hassan Fayad said his crews will be on-site by 9 a.m.

“We’re going to commence our activity there by demolishing starting [Wednesday], hopefully,” Fayad said.

He said the wood will be hauled to the transfer station.

Earlier in the year, village officials ordered the playground closed because the apparatuses were coming out of the ground and the covering of tiny stones had disappeared in some spots.

The plaques bearing the names of those that gave input and donated toward the construction in the late 1980s have been removed from the facility and will be preserved.

Mayor Tim Currier told the Board of Trustees earlier in the month that the plaques have were taken to the Department of Public Works and restored. When a new facility is built, they will be put back up on some sort of display, he said.

“I’m working with Mr. (Recreation Superintenent Mike) McCabe and Mr. (Public Works Superintendent Hassan) Fayad,” Currier said at the time.

In September, Currier said the board has filed for a grant to clean up and replace the wooden playground and will look for public input as to what will replace it.

“We’ve done a preliminary grant application. We’re in that phase now, nothing’s been settled on. Our priority now is to get it down,” Currier said Sept. 16. “At some point, we’ll look to the public for what they’d like to see there.”
