POTSDAM -- A Massena woman was jailed Monday for allegedly stealing $268,036.80 from Mental Health Counseling Services of Northern New York, 6956 NYS Nwy. 56, between March 2012 and Jan. 2016, according to state police.
Karen L. Jawan, 49, was charged with five counts of first-degree falsifying business records, five counts of second-degree possession of a forged instrument and second-degree grand larceny, troopers said.
The charges follow an embezzlement complaint first reported to state police Jan. 27, according to investigators.
All charges are felonies.
Jawan forged and cashed insurance checks made out to the business, police said.
She was arraigned before Potsdam Town Justice James Mason and remanded to St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility, Canton, in lieu of $5,000 bail, troopers said.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 19 at noon.
