MASSENA -- This year’s Massena Winter Carnival, organized by the Massena Chamber of Commerce, will feature ice sculptures, a snow maze, fireworks, a parade, hockey competitions, “kids days,” a 5k walk and a snow sculpture contest.

The carnival will run Jan. 15 to Jan. 26 and also include a photo contest, kickball and volleyball tournaments and snowshoe and cross-country skiing guided tour.

“This year we have had lots of other organizations wanting to join in on the Winter Carnival fun. As you can see by the schedule we are busy for 11 days,” said Denise Furnace, assistance director of the chamber.

Opening ceremonies are slated for Thursday, Jan. 15 at 5 p.m. at the chamber office, 16 Church St.

“This is when we unveil the ice sculptures at the chamber building and ask all the business owners in the area to unveil their ice sculptures at this time too,” Furnace said.

New this year will be a youth street hockey tournament.

“This is a joint venture between the chamber of commerce and Massena Visionaries. This is a 3 on 3 hockey for youth of the area,” Furnace said.

To sign up for the youth hockey tournament, visit the Facebook page “Youth Street Hockey tournament” or www.h3designs.com/massena-visionaries-street-hockey-signuo.form.html.

Sticking with tradition, the Massena Hockey Cup is taking place the first weekend, Friday, Jan. 16 and Saturday Jan. 17 at the Massena Arena.

The “Frozen Fun Parade” is going to be in the morning instead of the evening hours as in the past. It is set for 10 a.m. on Jan. 17.

The vendor market is going to be held at the St.Mary’s/ St. Joseph’s Social Hall on Jan. 17.

“This year we have scheduled for there to be demonstrations from Triple A Building Center, The Home Depot, Toni Helmer of Mimi’s Italian Cookies and possibly Todd McGee from Stich’s Upholstery,” Furnace said.

“We are still looking for vendors…$25 for a booth space and up to 3 tables will be provided for a $10 donation,” she said.

For the photo contest, the photos are going to be displayed at the Massena Public Library, 41 Glenn St. “There is two categories adult and child with a potential to win two voting categories. Judging and the popular vote through Facebook and individual votes,” Furnace said.

This year’s “Frozen Fun 5k Walk/Run” is being held at NYPA Hawkins Point Visitors Center Jan. 24. “We are taking registrations now…$20 to enter. Preregistrations help with getting the proper shirt size,” she said.

Furnace noted that the first 50 get a free long sleeve t-shirt and a goody bag including a hat from Verizon Wireless and a travel mug from Tarbell Lodging along with many other small gifts.

Registration will be at 9:30 a.m. with the race starting at 10 a.m.

“Frozen Fun Kids Day” will return to the NYPA Hawkins Point Visitors Center Jan. 24 from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. The first showing of Disney’s “Frozen” will start at 2 p.m. with subsequent showings at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

“We are asking parents to register their children ahead a time for a particular show time since the theater holds approximately 100 people at a time,” Furnace said.

Cubby T Clown and company will be there, games, crafts and others events will also be happening

The fireworks display will light up the sky at 8:30 p.m. Jan. 24 at Bushnell Field and is sponsored by Phillips Memorial Home, according to Furnace.

Closing ceremonies are at Emmanuel Congregational Church on West Orvis Street at 11 a.m. following a pancake breakfast being hosted by the church. The photo contest winners will be announced at that time.
