MASSENA -- Village Police Wednesday charged a 24-year-old with robbing Alkie’s Liquor Store the previous day, who admitted the crime in a voluntary statement.
Brian D. LaPrade is charged with third-degree robbery, a felony and petit larceny, a misdemeanor.
He told police he walked into the store and demanded money from the clerk around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night. No weapon was displayed, according to Lt. Mark LaBrake.
LaPrade said he got $52 and also took the business’ phone and tossed it in a snow bank, along with the clothes he was wearing. He then took the money and bought Suboxone, a drug used to treat opiate addiction that is widely abused. He had contemplated robbing a store for money earlier that day, according to his statement.
LaBrake said security camera footage helped break the case, despite the fact that LaPrade had covered his face with a scarf, by establishing a timeline.
The Massena police lieutenant said LaPrade is not connected to the November armed robbery of the Harte Haven Plaza Dollar Tree, where a cashier was threatened with a knife and money stolen.
“[The Dollar Tree robbery] is an open investigation,” he said.
LaPrade was arraigned in Massena Village Court before Justice Gerald Sharlow and remanded to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility, Canton in lieu of $10,000 bail or $20,000 bond.
