MASSENA -- Village officials are reminding residents that refuse for spring pickup is only allowed out the weekend before pickup dates for a specific side of town.

Mayor Tim Currier said the village has been receiving complaints that junk piles are already appearing around town.

Pickup dates north of the Grasse River are April 24 to 28. Waste there can go out this coming weekend.

On the south side of the Grasse River, pickup dates are May 1 to 5. That means people on that side of town can put their junk to the curb on April 29

Currier said waiting to put out refuse helps with the community’s appearance and saves money, should it rain.

“We ask people to help us with the appearance of our community by complying with the rules,” Currier said via email. “Rain only adds to the weight and drives up the overall cost of the program.”

Once cleanup starts, crews will traverse each street once. Dark bags will not be accepted. Textiles should be separated from the rest of the pile and placed into clear plastic bags. They will be donated to goodwill. Also, metal items, tires and Freon items should be in separate piles, according to the village.

They will accept latex paint (if dry), carpet and rugs, printers and keyboards and furniture.

Cardboard should be left for recycling.

Crews will not accept construction debris, televisions, computers (laptops, monitors and CPUs), cell phones, fluorescent light tubes, motor oil, batteries, chemicals, aerosol spray cans (unless totally depressurized), driveway sealers, wood preservatives, corrosives, oil-based paints and propane tanks (unless the valve is removed).

The village will allow brush disposal at 536 South Main St. with a voucher.

Some of the prohibited items can be disposed of at St. Lawrence County household hazardous waste collection days, which are May 20 in Canton and Sept. 16 in Louisville.
