MASSENA -- The Village Board of Trustees on Tuesday tabled a motion to fund the St. Lawrence Winter Chill out of concern that they may not legally be able to do so.

Deputy Mayor Matt Lebire said their discussion didn’t even reach a stage where they attached a dollar figure.

“There’s some research that has to be done,” he said, adding that state law forbids a municipality from giving away taxpayer money as a donation. “There’s really no discussion about if we would, or how much it would be.”

He said the Town of Louisville recently voted to give money to the event, but the cash came from the Summer Bash, not from tax coffers.

The Winter Chill is slated for Feb. 13 to 22 in Massena, Louisville and Waddington. So far, they have lined up a semi-formal dance, fishing derbies, a Guinness record attempt, skeet shoots, a sled hockey tournament and a Montreal Canadiens alumni game.
