MASSENA -- The village fared well in its yearly financial audit, according to Carl Seyfrath of Seyfarth and Seyfarth CPAs, which oversaw the process.

“You did a good job. There were a couple comments, but I’ve never seen an audit that hasn’t had some,” Seyfarth said.

He noted that their financial statements were in good order.

“That’s probably the most important part – that the info you’ve been getting on a monthly basis is accurate,” Seyfarth said.

Although the state often criticizes municipal governments for having too much fund balance, Seyfarth said Massena’s is in a good place.

“A government that doesn’t have a good fund balance has to borrow,” he said. “I’m a proponent of a healthy fund balance, balanced with the taxpayers’ needs.”

Seyfarth criticized that the village needs to update its accounting software.

He said it would make future audits run more smoothly and make it easier to spot potential errors.
