MASSENA -- At their July meeting, the village board will set a public hearing date on downtown renovation design standards based on an original document that calls for a ban on street-facing air conditioners.

The new regulations officials are drafting are based on a 25-page document from 2012 governing the renovations of buildings in the so-called "downtown core" area. The final draft, which Deputy Mayor Matt Lebire is hoping to present next month, may not include all of the suggestions from six years ago, such as the AC ban.

At Tuesday's Board of Trustees meeting, Mayor Tim Currier said any proposal would be subject to a public hearing and final vote by the village board before being enacted into a local law.

"We will not enact anything without public input," Currier said.

He said property owners not able to meet the standards may be able to get around some of them.

"If you cannot meet the renovation standard guidelines, there would be a pathway to approval so you can still do your project," he said.

"We have a really good feel on the direction we're headed. We still have some work to do ... to make it easy and make sense," Lebire said. "We want to take a hard look at the old design standards ... really pick out what would be important and critical and simplify it."
