MASSENA -- The village Board of Trustees passed a proclamation on Tuesday, March 18 recognizing the Massena Red Raiders hockey squad and their NYSPHSAA Division I championship season.

“I couldn’t be more proud,” Mayor James Hidy told a room packed full of players and their families.

“We really appreciate the community support … the time people took to travel to Utica to support the team in their effort,” Coach Mike Trimboli said. He was named Divison I Coach of the Year.

He was not the only member of the team honored following the championship game - senior captain Tyler Young was announced as the NYSPHSAA Division I player of the year and received a nod to the All-Tournament team. Patrick Manning, a sophomore forward was named Division I tournament MVP.

Following a season where they were undefeated in Section 10 play, the Raiders claimed the state crown by 4 – 1 on Sunday, March 9 against the Ithaca Little Red in Utica. Their overall record was 19-5-1.

“There are very few mayors who get to do what I’m going to do,” Hidy said prior to asking for a motion to approve the resolution recognizing the team, while getting a little choked up. He went on to laud the team’s hard work and dedication, along with that of Trimboli and Assistant Coach Ken Hurlbut.

“[This] team has brought honor and recognition to the Village of Massena community with their outstanding sportsmanship and play; and … the entire community is proud of their achievement,” the resolution reads.

The motion for the hockey team was placed late in the agenda and Hidy said he did it on purpose “to give you guys a flavor of local government.”

“This is where the tires hit the pavement,” he told the team. He added that he hopes those who leave Massena will someday “come back and give back to your community and run for public office.”
