MASSENA -- The village board is looking at setting up April public hearings to override the 2 percent tax cap and make a new local restricting parking near Jefferson Elementary School.
Mayor Tim Currier and Treasurer Julie Sharlow said at February village meetings that department spending plans and requests are in and they are crafting an initial proposal
In addition to the proposed April 7 public hearing at 5:30 p.m., the board is looking at work sessions at 5 p.m. on April 9, 13, 14, 20 and, if necessary, April 23.
The 2014-2015 spending plan brought a 4.75-percent tax increase. The final tax rate, at 100-percent equalization, was $14.99 per $1,000 of assessed value. This means the owner of a property assessed at $50,000 was billed $749.50 and the owner of a $100,000 property had to pay $1,499.
The board is also looking at restricting parking on Bayley Road opposite Jefferson Elementary.
Police Chief Mark LaBrake told the board last month that buses can’t safely get to the school when cars are parked there.
That hearing will also be April 7 at 5:30 p.m., if the trustees approve it.
