MASSENA -- Village Trustee Tim Ahlfeld says the Department of Public Works storage will not move to a town lot on Pontoon Bridge Road.

The village is trying to find a spot for their bulk materials storage. They now keep it at 536 South Main, which they are selling to a soybean producer who will open a processing facility and hire 30-40 people.

“Pontoon Bridge Road is off the table … the town will not be able to build until 2019 or 2020,” Ahlfeld said at Tuesday’s village board meeting. He said village and town officials recently discussed the problem and that’s what the town indicated.

However, Ahlfeld said the town did offer a lot on South Raquette Road.

“We could temporarily put stuff there,” Ahlfeld said.

Trustee Francis Carvel voiced frustration with the town’s decision to not let them use the Pontoon Bridge Road land.

“I’m still a firm believer that the North Main Street location is the best location … for some reason the town thinks that’s still a valuable piece of property,” he said. “Prime example of where two entities could jump together for the betterment of anybody and it’s still not working out.”

Deputy Mayor Matt Lebire said town officials mentioned they may put something on the lot.

“To be fair they did mention the possibility of development,” he said.
