MASSENA -- A village trustee says he is concerned that the Massena Housing Authority recently voted to write off $6,800 in bad debt at the MHA’s last board meeting.
“As everyone knows, they were late on one of their bills to us, so it raised a red flag,” Trustee Tim Ahlfeld said at Tuesday’s village board meeting.
Village officials said they will speak with the MHA to find out what’s going on.
In March, the board decided to work with MHA to help them pay a $43,000 PILOT payment in a timely fashion.
The balance was the authority’s 2014-2015 payment in lieu of taxes (PILOT) payment. A PILOT deal allows tax payments at a reduced rate for a number of years, after which point they owe taxes on the full assessment.
The trustees at the time said they want to work with the MHA, who are struggling in light of reduced occupancy and smaller payments from Housing and Urban Development, but need to be realistic.
