MASSENA -- Massena Town Supervisor Joe Gray says he will seek the Republican nomination for a third term.
He announced his intention Monday on a Facebook page called “Re-Elect Joe Gray Massena Town Supervisor.”
His term expires on Dec. 31. He was re-elected to his second term in 2013, running unopposed.
The page had 35 likes and 37 people following as of 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
Gray wrote a lengthy post Tuesday night where he touted a local tourism initiative of which he was a part.
“I chose today for my announcement because this week the BASSMASTER Elite returns to Waddington for the third time. I'm pleased and proud to say the Elite's decision to locate in Waddington grew out of an initial meeting I held at the Massena Town Hall in February of 2010 - my second month in office. The meeting was intended to find ways to capitalize on the St. Lawrence River and sports fishing. At the first meeting it was decided we should meet again in a couple weeks. The second meeting, held on a cold, snowy night, attracted Don Meissner, Dave Swanson (then head of North Country Savings Bank), Pat McKeown ( executive director of the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce at that time) and about 30 other people. Pat and I met after that meeting to talk, eventually formed FISHCAP and raised over $250,000 to support it for three years. We also hired Don to be the face of FISHCAP. Don's contacts brought the BASSMASTER people to St. Lawrence County because they wanted to hold a tournament in Ogdensburg. But, they didn't like the layout in the 'Burg. On their way to Massena they drove by Whittaker Park in Waddington and said, 'We want to hold it here.' The rest is history. So, when someone asks, the Elite Series is here because of Don Meissner. Of course, FISHCAP, North Country Savings, the Town of Massena and many others made it happen. And it all started at a small meeting in Massena Town Hall on a snowy night of February 2010,” Gray wrote on the page.
