MASSENA -- A member of the Town Council is questioning Massena’s role as the sole tax collector from the Massena Central School District, which draws revenue from Massena as well as parts of Brasher, Norfolk and Louisville.
“Shouldn’t the whole district pay for the receiving of taxes?” Councilman Samuel Carbone said at their Wednesday meeting. “The people in the town of Massena incur that cost.”
“We subsidize it, yes,” Town Supervisor Joseph Gray said. “It isn’t really fair.”
“Maybe we should revisit that,” Carbone said.
Town Bookkeeper Nancy Fregoe said the school appoints the town tax collectors as their tax collector. The town then pays their salaries, plus the cost of computers and other related materials.
She suggested the board consult an attorney from the Association of Towns.
“That’s an interesting question and I don’t think it’s one we should ignore,” Gray said.
