MASSENA -- The Town Council voted 4-0 to grant Walmart a $2 million assessment reduction on their Stephenville Road store.
“We agree to reduce their assessment from $12 million to $10 million, they’ll pay their school tax assessment at $12 million and there will be no challenges for at least three years,” Town Supervisor Joseph Gray said.
They will pay their town taxes on a $10 million assessment, as well as village and their next round of school taxes.
“If we pursued this in litigation, the preparation of a court-ready appraisal and the court cost alone would meet what they’re getting,” Councilman Albert Nicola said.
“Typically courts look more favorably on people grieving their assessment than the municipality,” Gray said.
