MASSENA -- The Town Council unanimously voted to give $10,000 to the Massena Boys and Girls Club from compact money, but only when their next check comes in from the Empire Development Corporation.
βItβs contingent on us receiving the compact,β Councilman Albert Nicola said.
The Boys and Girls Club is applying for funding through the River Valley Redevelopment Agency and they need a letter from the town pledging financial support, Town Clerk Georgette Davis said.
Town Supervisor Joseph Gray has already penned a letter supporting the organization.
The casino compact comes from electronic gaming revenues at the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino. They hand 25 percent to the Empire Development Corporation, who gives a portion of that to St. Lawrence and Franklin Counties. Each county takes half of its share and divides it between two towns β Massena and Brasher in St. Lawrence County and Bombay and Fort Covington in Franklin County.
The towns and counties are required to submit yearly spending plans before they can get the funds. All of the projects must somehow be tied to economic development.
