Massena town cited by FAA; 'big project' planned to completely restripe runways and taxiways at airport

MASSENA -- After being cited by the Federal Aviation Administration, the town will have to undertake what the highway superintendent says is a big project to completely restripe the runways and taxiways at Massena International Airport.

“It’s a large project,” Highway Superintendent Frank Diagostino said.

“We can’t go out and do this painting,” Town Supervisor Joseph Gray said.

Diagostino said the stripes have to be done to exact FAA specifications with reflective paint.

“I have a letter saying the deficiencies have to be done by 9-30-2016,” he said.

Gray said failure to do so could put the airport in jeopardy.

“They could shut down the airport,” he said.

The town will have to foot the bill.

“The money seams have dried up,” Diagostino said. “They call this ‘normal maintenance.”
