Massena tables request from Norfolk for surplus village police patrol car

MASSENA -- Following protest from a trustee, the village board tabled a resolution Tuesday to donate a surplus Massena Police Department vehicle to the Norfolk Police Department.

“I can’t see giving it to them … we should take our vehicles and trade it in,” Trustee Albert Deshaies said. “I don’t agree with this idea at all, period. It’s ridiculous.”

None of the other board members seemed sure, but believed the action would lend the vehicle while Norfolk PD worked on getting their own.

“They would be returning it?” Deputy Mayor Matt Lebire said.

“I’m not sure,” Police Chief Adam Love said.

“I don’t have a problem helping someone out to bridge a gap … I’m pretty sure it was to bridge a gap,” Trustee Tim Ahlfeld said.

The agenda item said “Authorization to Donate Surplus Police Vehicle to Town of Norfolk Police Department.”

Love said Norfolk police had asked him about surplus vehicles.

“They came to me and asked if there were any vehicles they could utilize,” he said. “The car they’re currently using is not safe to operate.”

Lebire said he wants to make sure the village wouldn’t be liable for anything, regardless of whether they give or lend the car.

“I have a question about a hold harmless agreement,” he said.

The board agreed to table the decision until their Sept. 20 meeting.
