MASSENA – The New York State School Public High School Athletic Association recognized the Massena varsity swim team for high grade averages during the fall semester.
They were presented the squad with Scholar Athlete Team awards at Thursday’s Board of Education meeting.
The team members’ 95.7 combined average trumped that of any other sports team at Massena Central. Girls soccer had a combined average of 94.8, volleyball was 94.2, football was 93.6 and boys soccer was 92.9.
“All five of our teams in the fall made it and that has never happened before,” athletic director Timothy Hayes said.
The team roster is composed of Jocelyn Bogdan, Taylor Brault, Baylee Carroll, Courtney Croasdaile, Allison Dix, Laura Dowdy, Abigail Elman, Ashna Gupta, Savannah Hays, Brianna Hinckley, Emily Hurlbut, Makenzie LaBrake, Mackenzie LaPage, Sydney Lewis, Gabby McGinley, Bailey Nevill, Kaitlynn Northrup, Emma O’Connell, Kalie Peets, Sydney Shadle, Courtnee Stowell, and Kurstin Stowell. They are coached by Beth Mock.
Hayes added that of the 222 high school athletes, 142 were recognized as All-Northerns, meaning they garnered a cumulative average of 88 or better
