Massena spring cleanup dates set for April 24-May 5

MASSENA — Village spring cleanup this year will be April 24 to 28 on the north side of the Grasse River and May 1 to 5 on the south side.

There is a new requirement this year for textiles.

Since they are considered recyclable, shoes, clothing, fabrics, linens and similar items need to be separated from all other cleanup items.

Deputy Mayor Matt Lebire is asking village residents to donate spring cleanup items still in working order to the needy, rather than putting it to the curb.

“Anything that’s usable, I would recommend individuals reach out to local charities to see if it’s anything they can use,” Lebire said at Tuesday’s Board of Trustees meeting.

Mayor Tim Currier said items should not be put to the curb until one week before residents’ respective side of town’s dates.

“We ask people not to put their items out until the weekend before. There will be information coming out in the media as to what is acceptable what is not,” Currier said.

During cleanup days, crews will traverse each street one time. Construction materials will not be accepted. Crew will not pick up televisions, computer monitors or other electronic items that people can break open and salvage metal parts. They are accepted at no charge at the Massena Transfer Station, state Route 420, year-round. People should not put materials in dark bags. Items that contain freon, such as refrigerators, air conditioners and humidifiers should be separated. Refrigerator doors need to be removed.

Items considered hazardous waste can be disposed of for free on Sept. 16 at a St. Lawrence County hazardous waste collection event.

Police are enforcing laws restricting people from out of town from dumping waste in the village leading up to cleanup dates. Last year, they issued several citations for unlawful dumping.
