MASSENA -- Railings will be installed at both U.S. locks near Massena this season as protection against falls by the linehandlers.
Sections of railing 260 feet long will be installed at both ends of the lock chamber walls (north sides) at the Eisenhower and Snell locks, just behind the lock wall coaming.
The railings have been engineered to accommodate the mooring cable forces associated with a vessel lockage, according to the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation, the Canadian management arm of the Seaway. The railings will be smooth and tapered to ensure non-obstructed transition of heaving lines and wires.
Once the railings are installed, embarking and disembarking procedures will change.
For pilot exchanges and other such boardings, embarking and disembarking will take place mid-lock chamber, where there is no railing. Boarding ramps have been modified to ensure boarding safety.
