Massena school board, community members encourage public to attend March education rally

MASSENA -- Board of Education member Robert Sommerfield encouraged the public to attend a rally with the Alliance for Quality Education on March 12 in Albany.

“If our teachers or staff are interested in that, we’ll work with them,” Sommerfield said at Thursday’s board meeting.

Assemblywoman Addie Russell and Jasmine Gripper of the AQE held a public forum at Massena High School on January 9 where they spoke in support of the demonstration, aimed at bringing Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s attention to the disparity in school funding throughout the state.

Gripper and Russell pointed out that the state has yet to make good on a 2007 court settlement – they currently owe just over $10 million to Massena alone.

“Just think what you could do with that money for education,” said Susanne Daye, who spoke during the meeting’s public comment period.
