MALONE – The Malone Chess Club Inc., a local children’s nonprofit, recently played host to another edition of the Upstate NY Open Chess Championships.
About 50 total players competed for over $1,000 in prize money. The participants traveled in from throughout the Adirondacks in addition to Syracuse, Watertown, Ogdensburg, and a group from Montreal. The tournament featured three divisions: Ages 12 and under (Youth), 13-17, and ages 18 and up (Adult).
Potsdam’s Sean Boyle finished sixth in the youth group.
At the top of the 13-17 division was James Farbotnik-Harvey of Massena. Harvey played strongly in all of his matches and finished with a perfect record.
Finishing second was another Massena player, Miles Lafrance. Lafrance’s only loss was to Harvey.
Finishing third was Potsdam’s Brandon Rawson.
Massena’s Johnny Farbotnik-Harvey finished fifth in this division.
In the adult division Potsdam’s Randy Gay finished 3rd, and Potsdam’s David Boyle finished 5th.
