MASSENA -- Village police have made an arrest in last week's rash of thefts from upwards of 50 unlocked vehicles and investigators are still trying to find owners for some of the recovered stolen property.

Nicholas P. Adams, 23, of 55 Liberty Ave., Massena is charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony and four misdemeanor counts of fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

He was arraigned in Massena court by Justice Gerald Sharlow and remanded to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility, Canton in lieu of $5,000 bail or $10,000 bond.

Lt. Mark LaBrake said police are looking at additional suspects and there is a possibility of further arrests.

“The investigation is ongoing,” he said.

Adams admitted in a statement to police that he and a friend met near the footbridge and hatched their plan to steal items from cars. He told police he was under the influence of Xanax, Subutex and alcohol at the time. Xanax is a sedative prescribed to treat anxiety disorders and Subutex is prescribed to treat opiate addiction.

Adams told police that he and the friend stole items including a GPS unit, change, DVD players, CD players, a portable car DVD player, an Apple iPhone and a golf bag with clubs. He said they stashed their plunder near the footbridge and made several trips back and forth.

LaBrake said some of the stolen property has been recovered.

He said that since word has gotten out that police made an arrest in the case, more village residents are calling in after checking their cars and noticing missing property.

“If people check their vehicles and there’s stuff missing, we have stuff here … that we believe to be stolen property and we don’t have an owner for yet,” LaBrake said. He added that people who want to inquire should call the police station at 769-3577.

He urges people to lock their vehicles and not store anything valuable inside them.

“Please lock your doors and don’t keep anything valuable in there,” LaBrake said.

On Oct. 2, police issued a statement saying they were investigating a string of thefts from unlocked vehicles. They said on Sept. 30, the thieves hit vehicles on the north end of town, including Garfield Street, Jefferson Avenue, Monroe Parkway, Roosevelt Street and Washington Street.

On the night of Oct. 1, the reports came from the south end of town, including Amherst Road, Colgate Drive, East Hatfield Street and Middlebury Avenue.
