MASSENA --Massena Police Chief Tim Currier recently discussed the benefits of establishing a local Boys & Girls Club with the Massena Rotary Club.
Currier, who chairs proposed club’s board of directors, said the club can go a long way in helping Massena’s youth.
He said that despite the image of Massena as a retirement community, statistics show only 16.6 percent of the population is over age 65, while 23.5 percent is under 18.
He also told Rotarians that one out of four kids are born into poverty with little money to do anything, such as participate in hockey or soccer.
Currier said that 51 percent of Massena Central School District students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches.
The proposed Boys and Girls club’s mission is to help youth develop the qualities needed to become responsible citizens and community leaders.
