MASSENA The town board unanimously passed a motion to ask the county to get the go-ahead from the state Department of Transportation to change the speed limit on North Raquette Road from 55 miles per hour to 45 miles per hour.
The motion came after Kathy Nezezon of Brasher Falls, who owns property on the road near a large curve, said she observes a lot of traffic going above the speed limit and she is concerned for her grandchildren’s safety.
Town Supervisor Joseph Gray said the board will look into if the road is in fact town property and if it is the state still has the final say over speed limit changes.
“I’m going to tell you a story you’re not going to like,” Gray told Nezezon.
He pointed to a past incident where the town wanted to lower the speed limit on Donahue Road. The town had to get permission from the county, who in turn petitioned the state, who asked and went with the opinion of New York State Police, who said the change wasn’t necessary, Gray stated.
